Prevention: Clark Kent does it and so can you

I am in love with the field of prevention. Many years ago my younger half-brother brother became ill, very seriously ill. The illness changed who he was and who he would be and I felt angry, helpless and frustrated. I knew that terrible things happen in life but I could not accept and, for better or for worse, I did not accept that this had happened to him. I wanted to do something, anything to make things better. So, I returned to school and spent two years studying his illness, an illness for which, as I would find, there is no cure. In the end I was forced to accept that what had happened to my brother could never be undone. When I finally looked up from my frenzied search and sat in stillness, I realized that my world view had changed. Everywhere I looked I saw people suffering. Like a thick, dark cloud, this new awareness engulfed me. I lived inside it for quite some time. Finally, it dawned on me that, unlike my brother’s case, a massive part of human suffering was and is preventable, this being even more so here in the U.S. where we have access to incredible resources. The thought burned through my cloud. I felt great joy and great relief. Yes, I could not change what had happened to my brother, but, I might be able to help prevent unnecessary suffering for someone else. And that is the story of how I fell in love with the field of prevention.

I gain ridiculous amounts of personal pleasure knowing people are taking care of themselves, mind, body, and spirit, and seeing people take good care of each other. I love knowing that just by eating well, exercising, and decreasing our exposure to toxins, we can change our health, our quality of life, and likely our longevity. On the same note, I also gain much personal pleasure knowing people are taking care of this earth which holds our air, our water, our food and so much of our joy. I am not a prevention expert or a green living expert. I am learning as I go. I am a good researcher with a passion for prevention and eco-living. This blog and my website put you in touch with the uber research gurus, the prevention and eco savants and the one’s who walk their talk. These creative and often brilliant people show us new ways to live that protect our health and the health of our earth
